Whitefish Montana rests at the northern end of the picturesque Flathead Valley of northwestern Montana. It lies on the western slop of the Continental Divide at an elevation of 3,028 feet. A year-round recreational haven, Whitefish boasts a world renown ski-resort, a large natural lake with a public beach area and northwest Montana's only 36-hole golf course.
Whitefish Montana offers several types of real estate to tantalize every buyer. Gorgeous lake properties, quaint townhouses and ranches with acreage are just some of the distinctive types of homes for sale. The north end of Flathead Valley is a hundred feet above Kalispell. This slight elevation change along with being nestled against Big Mountain make for a slight weather change compared to the rest of the Flathead Valley. The Flathead Valley itself also enjoys a milder climate than the rest of the northern 48th parallel.
Whitefish is a transportation hub for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad and Amtrak trains. The Whitefish Depot boasts being the busiest train stop between Minneapolis and Seattle. More than 68,000 passengers came and went to and from Whitefish through the Whitefish Depot in 2006. The Stumptown Museum is housed in the depot and features historic items and information on the founding of the area that is now Whitefish, MT. For instance, Whitefish began as a fur trading hub and later the railroad and logging industries helped it flourish. Today the economy relies heavily on tourism. Over half of the residents in Whitefish have lived here for under 10 years. Despite the economical shift to tourism, Whitefish has held onto the charisma and charm of the early days.

Not only is the Whitefish area gorgeous and surrounded by protected wilderness, there are several public parks for the residents to enjoy. The three most celebrated of the 11 city parks are on Whitefish Lake: City Beach, Whitefish Lake State Park and Les Mason Park. Whitefish Lake is 7 miles long with mostly sandy beaches. City Beach has a community feeling with a boat launch, roped off swimming area and picnic areas at the southern tip of the lake. The gradual sandy beach is great for kids and provides more shallows to share. Whitefish Lake State Park offers campsites as well as a beach and boat launch. It provides great access to the western undeveloped shores of the lake. Les Mason Park is a wilder and quieter public beach access than the other two. Located on the east shore, a short paved walkway through the forest reveals a charming gravel beach. A swimming area is roped off and picnic tables are scattered throughout. A swimming dock is the highlight of this secluded beach.
Whitefish is an active community but also an artistic one. Creative arts such as ceramics, sculpture, paintings and photography are complimented by live music downtown and world class theater projects at the O'Shaughnessy Center and the Alpine Theater. The Glacier Symphony and Chorale play periodic shows in Whitefish and the out-lying Flathead Valley as well. This beautiful area has attracted filmmakers, actors, writers and music producers. Many local craftsmen have made Whitefish their home, including woodworkers, custom home builders, jewelers and more.
