The Big Mountain was originally named Hellroaring Mountain before the pioneers of downhill skiing in the Whitefish Area started hiking up in order to ski down in 1934. In 1947, one ski lift was constructed and Big Mountain Resort was born. From then on this 7,000 foot mountain was called Big Mountain. The mountain has come a long way in that time.

The resort is now called The Whitefish Mountain Resort and offers both winter and summer recreation.
